Help Me To Speak [Part 1]

Posted by Kyle Madison on April 8, 2010

This film follows the extraordinary story of stuttering children struggling to break out of their isolation and learn to speak. Stuttering, also known as stammering in the United Kingdom, is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions and prolongations of sounds, syllables, words or phrases; and involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the stutterer is unable to produce sounds. The term stuttering is most commonly associated with involuntary sound repetition, but it also encompasses the abnormal hesitation or pausing before speech, referred to by stutterers as blocks, and the prolongation of certain sounds, usually vowels. Much of what constitutes “stuttering” cannot be observed by the listener; this includes such things as sound and word fears, situational fears, anxiety, tension, self-pity, stress, shame, and a feeling of “loss of control” during speech. The emotional state of the individual who stutters in response to the stuttering often constitutes the most difficult aspect of the disorder. No single, exclusive cause of stuttering is known.

let’s face the reality m8 if we lived in the 1940′s and Adolf Hitler was still alive he would rather exterminate the stammering population of Europe instead of the eastern European jews cos we’re a lot more pathetic than they are!!!! btw i’m not anti Semitic

@coolbrett

No matter how much a stutterer tries, he or she may not be able to get it out at all, so we should want people to help us instead, and we should thank people who try to help us

Very nasty stutter I am- how do I get to be as lucky as Nathan with women…..

It angers me to no end that people diss me, girls don’t take me seriously because of the stuttering.

I have asked girls out in the past yeah- but they never show up at the time we agreed on. Girls play me as an idiot.
I am now waiting for my blood sugar to get high enough so it will end the stutter once and forever.

I dont mean finishing words for me or just stopping you from talking because they get your point. I mean they should take the time to let you get it out. Maintain EYE contact (not at your mouth) and basically just be all ears. You know that saying I’m all ears? Thats what I expect people to be when I talk and thats what I be for people when they talk

I’m not as bad as the people in these clips but I still feel pathetic and ashamed every time I stutter, and the look on peoples faces is enough to make me want to escape to a deserted island forever just so i dont have to speak anymore.. so I cant imagine how bad it must be for these people. Atleast they have dreams and ambitions and try to achieve the despite their stutter. I’m too afraid to move on with my life or go out of my comfort zone. ive been working at the same job for 5 years

another thing, nothing angers me more when people laugh at, stare at, snigger at, or just have a blank look on their face when they talk to a stutterer. Stutterers need to be helped when they have trouble. You need to put yourself in their shoes and imagine what it would be like for them and be considerate. Try to understand WHAT they’re trying to say and don’t just think “geez come on spit it out”. It’s one of the worst things people can do to a stutterer.

I thought I was the only one that just had trouble saying my name, but turns out lots of stutterers also can’t! ! I’m not as bad as the guy who couldn’t ask for the time.. I can say a fair bit without stuttering but I have lots of trouble saying my name. Probably because when people ask for your name they expect you to just say it out of the blue and they just look at you while you say it. If they understood I had a stutter they might change the way they listen and it would help

Lol that receptionist, poor guy. I swear I stutter when I’m high cos I’m not thinking bout what I’m saying, the ideas and thoughts are in my head but they’re going so quick and I want to say them and I’m so excited that I realise I’m doing it and people just stare and you think you gotta get it out in time cos they’re waiting. Lol then I just realise take a break. But I don’t usually stutter, only when I’m super stoned. Weird.

my name is my worst word. im lucky coz my stammer is not bad and easily hidable, but my name is the bad one.
people think i ‘forget my name’ lol and when im drinking, people think im really pissed coz i cant say my name. i found that the michael palin centre for stammering children helped me alot. If you stammer and have never heard of the michael palin centre, google it. if u can get on a course, it may change ure life.

You’re an idiot. Then you never stuttered. Some people can grow out of it, but some don’t. Doesn’t happen for everyone. You should just shut up before you look like an idiot.
