March 2010: This song is out on DVD! More here: www.shoutfactorystore.com Tom Lehrer on Amazon.com: www.amazon.com Tom Lehrer songs on iTunes: itunes.apple.com Lehrer did have a healthy perspective on marriage and aging. And he is right, as always. Just listen to “When You Are Old And Gray”. This is true Lehrer wisdom of life, and it is good fun too
Now, is it true that some YouTube videos deteriorate over time? The last time this video was checked it had a stuttering playback. If this happens to you, add the code &fmt=18 to the page url or select the alternative version (“National Brotherhood Week” and “When You Are Old And Gray” double video). Lehrer said “OK” to “The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel” on YouTube, as long as the performance is not altered and as long as it’s free in the YouTube flash video format. Click on the Lehrer icon and visit the channel’s front page. The channel is Lehrer only, no other YouTube ego’s. And here is a link to a NEW channel support page: home.broadpark.no © 2010 Tom Lehrer Recording date: September 10th 1967 Format: Ampex Quadruplex PAL 4:3 Status: A very rare recording Storage: Sony Digital Betacam Production and preservation: The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation – the NRK, Norway. to the person who wondered if anyone played this at their wedding , I know someone who did at that , very fun , by the end the whole crowd was laughing since they used it for their first dance!

Actually the message is simple: It’s a comic take on how people drive each other crazy being married for a long time. Even the most loving newlyweds will bicker about the tiniest things 20 years down the road. A lot of Tom Lehrer’s songs have a simple message, nothing hidden beneath the exterior (although there are a few exceptions), but when you’re looking for humor, you’re not looking for a deep, profound, message anyway, you’re looking to laugh. And this certainly succeeds at that.

Besides, you being old and gray, it’s not saying much for you, is it?

That’s just perverting the song; I don’t think he’s saying we should all have blonde models at the age of 55, merely that one should grasp youth whilst one still has it.

The love of my life is 27 years younger than me. If we should marry, I want to play this song for our first dance. I’m no longer young, but I still have a sense of hummer….

I saw this guy on stage in Birmingham back in 1963. He was a total one-man revolution and sooooo irreverent then. Bless him.
