One of the first things you need to realize to stop stuttering is that stuttering is not a disease; it has been classified as a defect. Stuttering has been known to cause low self esteem among those who stutter. As someone that has a stutter you may feel that you are not taken seriously because when you begin to speak you take up a lot of time. Even if the other person is understanding and has patience with you, it still weighs heavily on your mind. There are many methods that have been tried and tested over the years. I am going to discuss a method here that can help you if you implement it properly.

Stop Stuttering With Self Control Methods

This method has to do with exercising your self control and to focus before you begin to speak. It is believed that you can stop stuttering if you slow down your train of thoughts and your speech. What happens when you stutter is that you sometimes think too far ahead and your mouth essentially cannot keep up with your brain. I think everyone is guilty of this at times, but with people who have a stutter is more prominent. You tend to lose the correlation between your trains of thoughts and your speech.

Sometimes it is easier said than done, you should think before you speak. Instead of just jumping intro the fray when a conversation is going, you should pause, hold back, think and then begin to speak. You will find the benefit once you slow down. As there is no stuttering cure medically, you need to factor in a lot of trial and error to get over the defect. If you slow down, you will find that you are not stuttering as much. Speaking slowly, with pauses and softly, is the key to avoid stuttering. With time and practice this method is proven to work.

 

Stop Stuttering and Planning Ahead


With more and more practice you will be able to think far ahead and you will be training your subconscious mind to work in a different manner. After time you will not have to think about it as often because your subconscious mind will be trained, just like an athlete trains their body for a sporting event. It will automatically take over for you and you will be able to stop stuttering almost completely.


Sometimes it will be hard to wait and think before you speak. I myself at time will be so excited about what I am going to say next that I am not really listening to the other person and my mind begins racing. It is best to even count in your head and let your mouth take a deep breath. This allows you to get back in sync and begin to speak in a clear and simple manner. One good trick is to try to visualize what you want to say before speaking to stop stuttering when you speak.


This is just one of the many methods that are out there to assist people with a stutter. Other forms would include hypnotherapy, one-on-one speech lessons, and even group programs. The Fear Of Stuttering

I am someone, who from what my parents have told me, started to stutter when I was four years of age. I have to say that I hated having a stuttering problem and was determined that I eventually would be able to have the confidence to say whichever words that I wanted to, in any situation. There were you see a number of words which I believed I just could not say and I also found it difficult to talk when I felt under pressure. After living with the stutter for eighteen years, I finally managed to achieve fluency and life has never been so good. It is like having a weight lifted from my shoulders.

Many people who stutter find that it can, in a way, rule their whole lives. Every decision they take seems to be affected by the speech impediment. For example, I decided to leave school because of my own stutter. My life at school was made so much harder by being unable to converse fluently. In fact I used to fear going to school, this was mainly because I was scared that I would be asked to read out aloud from a book or would be asked a question in front of the whole class. I will never forget when I attempted to take part in a role play in an English lesson, I was a complete nervous wreck and had a terrible time.

When I was at home, a place where I should be relaxed, I used to be afraid of the telephone of all things. Fluent people may well think that I am crazy from some of the things that I am admitting to in this article. On the other hand, I am sure other people who have a stutter may identify with some of the issues that I was trying to deal with on a daily basis. Going back to the telephone, there were many times when the phone would start to ring and I would just ignore it and not answer it. My parents would return home a little while later and would see that someone has perhaps left a message. They would enquire as to why I had not answered the call, I would reply with some excuse such as that I had popped out to the shops.

As you can see I basically had a fear of stuttering and during this period I would do anything to avoid stuttering. To overcome the speech impediment I was willing to do anything to beat it.
