Stop Stuttering Foundation

One of the first things you need to realize to stop stuttering is that stuttering is not a disease; it has been classified as a defect. Stuttering has been known to cause low self esteem among those who stutter. As someone that has a stutter you may feel that you are not taken seriously because when you begin to speak you take up a lot of time. Even if the other person is understanding and has patience with you, it still weighs heavily on your mind. There are many methods that have been tried and tested over the years. I am going to discuss a method here that can help you if you implement it properly.

Stop Stuttering With Self Control Methods

This method has to do with exercising your self control and to focus before you begin to speak. It is believed that you can stop stuttering if you slow down your train of thoughts and your speech. What happens when you stutter is that you sometimes think too far ahead and your mouth essentially cannot keep up with your brain. I think everyone is guilty of this at times, but with people who have a stutter is more prominent. You tend to lose the correlation between your trains of thoughts and your speech.

Sometimes it is easier said than done, you should think before you speak. Instead of just jumping intro the fray when a conversation is going, you should pause, hold back, think and then begin to speak. You will find the benefit once you slow down. As there is no stuttering cure medically, you need to factor in a lot of trial and error to get over the defect. If you slow down, you will find that you are not stuttering as much. Speaking slowly, with pauses and softly, is the key to avoid stuttering. With time and practice this method is proven to work.

Stop Stuttering and Planning Ahead

With more and more practice you will be able to think far ahead and you will be training your subconscious mind to work in a different manner. After time you will not have to think about it as often because your subconscious mind will be trained, just like an athlete trains their body for a sporting event. It will automatically take over for you and you will be able to stop stuttering almost completely.

Sometimes it will be hard to wait and think before you speak. I myself at time will be so excited about what I am going to say next that I am not really listening to the other person and my mind begins racing. It is best to even count in your head and let your mouth take a deep breath. This allows you to get back in sync and begin to speak in a clear and simple manner. One good trick is to try to visualize what you want to say before speaking to stop stuttering when you speak.

This is just one of the many methods that are out there to assist people with a stutter. Other forms would include hypnotherapy, one-on-one speech lessons, and even group programs. I will get into those in future articles. I hope you can utilize this method to help stop your stuttering today. Post a comment or send me an email with your opinion and you success story.

I am someone, who from what my parents have told me, started to stutter when I was four years of age. I have to say that I hated having a stuttering problem and was determined that I eventually would be able to have the confidence to say whichever words that I wanted to, in any situation. There were you see a number of words which I believed I just could not say and I also found it difficult to talk when I felt under pressure. After living with the stutter for eighteen years, I finally managed to achieve fluency and life has never been so good. It is like having a weight lifted from my shoulders.

Many people who stutter find that it can, in a way, rule their whole lives. Every decision they take seems to be affected by the speech impediment. For example, I decided to leave school because of my own stutter. My life at school was made so much harder by being unable to converse fluently. In fact I used to fear going to school, this was mainly because I was scared that I would be asked to read out aloud from a book or would be asked a question in front of the whole class. I will never forget when I attempted to take part in a role play in an English lesson, I was a complete nervous wreck and had a terrible time.

When I was at home, a place where I should be relaxed, I used to be afraid of the telephone of all things. Fluent people may well think that I am crazy from some of the things that I am admitting to in this article. On the other hand, I am sure other people who have a stutter may identify with some of the issues that I was trying to deal with on a daily basis. Going back to the telephone, there were many times when the phone would start to ring and I would just ignore it and not answer it. My parents would return home a little while later and would see that someone has perhaps left a message. They would enquire as to why I had not answered the call, I would reply with some excuse such as that I had popped out to the shops.

As you can see I basically had a fear of stuttering and during this period I would do anything to avoid stuttering. To overcome the speech impediment I was willing to do anything to beat it.

There are many different treatments for people who stutter/stammer. In this article I will describe some of the experiences and types of stuttering or stammering therapy people experiment with.

One of the first places people go to when seeking help for a speech impediment is speech therapy. I myself started attending speech therapy at the age of five and I continued at different times to attend until the age of eighteen. Now I am sure some people have some very positive experiences and results from this type of therapy, however I was not one of these people. From what I remember the main advice I was given was to slow down my speech and to take a deep breath before starting to speak. When I observed fluent people speaking, I rarely heard them take a deep breath.

Another area people try is hypnotherapy. This was something I really wanted to try for myself at the age of around nineteen. Unfortunately each session cost nearly as much as my weekly wage at that point of my life. I never managed to experience this form of stammering therapy.

I now believe that stuttering is a psychological as well as a physical problem. As hypnotherapy only really deals with the psychological issues I am now not sure if it could have offered me the complete answer.

The other treatments people who have a stutter try are speech courses. These courses are either on a group basis or on a one to one basis. With each of these courses, the person who attends the course is required to practice the techniques to make them a natural part of their speech.

Confidence courses are another form of treatment for stuttering. In my opinion these are of value, however do not cover the physical aspects of how to eradicate a stutter.

There are many types of treatment for people who have a stammer or stutter, this article describes some of them. Stuttering has gained a lot of coverage in the news over the last number of years with people like pop singer Gareth Gates highlighting the problems people who stutter have.

Speech therapy is the normal course of therapy people who stutter try. In my opinion this is useful however has limited power as the therapists themselves do not believe a stutter can be overcome. They are therefore merely helping people cope and from my own personal experience the main advice given, is to slow down when talking and to take a deep breath before speaking.

Hypnotherapy is another form of stuttering therapy. Success is no doubt largely dependent on the quality of the hypnotherapist involved. In my opinion stuttering is not only an emotional problem but also a physical problem and that hypnotherapy only deals with the emotional side.

Group speech courses is the next form of stuttering treatment. There are many of these type of courses which will either teach coastal breathing, or slowed or prolonged speech. I think this form of stuttering help is better than the first two however I believe that every person is an individual and needs individual treatment with courses tailored to their individual needs.

One to one speech courses are for me the best form of treatment. There is nowhere to hide and the speech coach can really get to grips with the type of problem the person who has the stutter has. The speech coach can fully concentrate on that person for the duration of the course and a type of bond can form. This is the form of stuttering treatment which I believe is likely to prove the most beneficial and successful.

In this article, I write about the various types of stuttering therapies that are available. My background, I started stuttering at the age of four, it continued until I was twenty-two, basically ruining the eighteen years in between. I then fought very hard and eventually overcame the stutter.

According to latest figures, around one percent of people in the US have a stutter. Most of these people will have sought help at some stage of their life, and will have looked into stuttering treatments and the different forms of stuttering therapy. This is what they may have found:

Traditional speech therapy

Speech therapy is where the majority of people who stutter will start when trying to improve their speech. I myself, attended speech therapy from the age of five, I continued attending until the age of eighteen. Thirteen years and I still had the stutter, that was successful!

The advice I had been given at speech therapy was basically:

speak slowly

take a deep breath before you speak

accept your stutter

I am sorry but that advice is just not good enough.

Group stuttering speech courses

There are now a number of private speech courses that are run on a group basis. In my opinion these are of more value than traditional speech therapy as at least the aim of the course is to eradicate the stutter. Speech therapy is more of controlling and accepting the stutter.

One to one speech courses

There are also one to one speech courses available. I personally believe that this is the best form of stuttering therapy as each person will have their own individual stutter and needs.

Stuttering self help dvd and ebook

For people who would prefer a self help form of stuttering therapy, there are now stuttering dvds and ebooks available.

Having a stutter can have a dramatic effect on somebody’s confidence.

I have met many people who stutter, I myself had a stutter for eighteen years and I now run stutter courses to help people to achieve fluency.

One of my clients once told me about a situation he was involved in. He and his friends went to a bar one Saturday afternoon to have a few drinks. After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he found it hard to order the drink and started to stutter. The bar man accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He tried to explain that he was not drunk but had a stutter but the bar man said “That’s what they all say”

He returned to his friends who asked him where his drink was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarrassing.

His friends were very good and one of them told him that he would go to the bar in ten minutes and buy him a drink. He duly did this however the barman later saw the person who has a stutter drinking the drink and kicked the whole group out of the bar.

This is a typical situation people who have a stutter find themselves in.

Another client was stopped by the police in his car. The police asked him some questions. He was very nervous and started to stutter. The police presumed he had been drinking and tested his breath for alcohol.

I started to stutter at the age of four or five. My parents took me to a lot of different types of speech therapy, some in groups, some on a one to one basis. The kind of advice I was given to control my stutter or to overcome my stutter were varied. These are some:

slowing down my breath costal breathing prolonged speech taking a deep breath before I spoke

I had began in the class called, preschool stutter. This term is labeled by the stutter speech therapist or the stutter speech pathologist. My parents were reassured that most people who stutter in childhood soon grow out of it. Well I was one of those who didn’t.

I then joined the class called, childhood stutter. I continued to attend speech therapy and joining in with their speech therapy activities and their speech therapy games.

I then progressed to the class called, adult stutter. I now decided that speech therapy was not really working for me.

I decided to try my own form of stutter self help. Even though I had a stutter, at times I could talk very well. As an example when I was drunk, I spoke nearly perfectly fluent.

After nearly a year I managed to overcome my stutter and eradicate the stutter once and for all. As a career I now help other people to stop stuttering.

How many fluent people ever consider what life is like for somebody with a stutter?

Going through life with a stutter is quite difficult, and at times the stutterer would appreciate a little more compassion.

After overcoming a stutter myself, I asked some of my friends, how they thought life was like, having a severe stutter. I had quite a few different responses, some of which annoyed me.

Jim said:

“I always thought that you felt a bit sorry for yourself and you made out that your stutter was some huge disasterous problem. It’s not like you couldn’t talk at all, is it?

I also felt at times that you lacked courage, for example always asking Tony to order your drinks for you.”

Paul then gave his opinion:

“I found it quite funny that at times you would be talking really well, but within a few minutes you couldn’t get a word out.”

Ashley joined in:

“I felt a bit sorry for you, seeing you struggle, was quite painful to watch.”- This was a better comment!

Nigel, another friend:

“I am glad that I don’t stutter, but what I think you needed to understand was that you were not the only one with issues and problems. I am extremely impressed that you have managed to overcome it though.”

I was annoyed mostly by the comments from Jim, and responded:

“So you think to have a stutter is not that bad then Jim? OK, I challenge you to go up to the bar and order a pint of lager, but when you order it I want you to stutter on some of the words.”

I showed him how I wanted him to say the order, when to stutter etc. I then said:

“After you have stuttered on the words, I want you to see how it feels and to experience the way people look at you. You may then understand a little bit more of what I went through.”

Jim declined this challenge, even after a severe amount of prompting and teasing from different members of our group.

Having a stutter is not nice and when someone who has a stutter seeks help, please offer them your full support.

I was quite fortunate in that some of my friends did go to the bar for me and my parents were quite prepared to make certain phone calls, like phoning the doctors and the car insurance.

At other periods in my life though, other people did make fun of me and at times I would become very depressed and withdrawn and would wonder why it was me who had a stutter.

There are many types of disability. I am somebody who believes that to have a stutter is a form of disability.

I think most people would probably say no, however I disagree. People who stutter have to struggle their way through life at times. I am somebody who had a stutter for eighteen years. I am going to now explain one of the situations that I found difficult and how my mind or what I would call my demons would be saying to me.

This is when trying to meet and approach people of the opposite sex. Lets say I am in a bar and I see a woman/girl who catches my eye. I think to myself, who don’t you go and talk to her and make a move etc? My demons are always talking to me, and are basically saying “She won’t want to know you.

You have a stutter and when you start talking she will hear it. Do you really think she will want to date somebody who has a stutter? Even if she is interested, you then have to possibly meet her friends and family.

How will they find you and treat you, when they realize you have a stutter?” These demons would make me think twice and more often than not I would not even bother going over and talking to the person. I would therefore let the demons win.

This is one example of thousands where the stutter handicaps your ability to live a normal life. This is why I believe stuttering is a disability.

Having a stutter affects your confidence in and gaining employment. People who stutter can find it hard attending an interview, having to speak under pressure to people they do not know.

Social occasions such as weddings or a party can fill people who stutter with dread. Not only finding conversation difficult but also ordering food and drinks.

For people who are fluent, it is hard to comprehend what it must be like to have a stutter. This article describes some of the tasks that can prove difficult and stressful for the person who has a stutter, tasks which fluent people simply take for granted.

I am somebody who has managed to overcome a stutter which had affected my life for eighteen years. When I was at school, I would dread the time when I would have to read out aloud in class out of a book. I would count down to which paragraph I would have to read and then I would look through to see which words I was going to have to say. I was hoping that there would not be many words beginning with b,d,v, or g, as I found these words especially hard to say. When speaking in a conversation I would always try to avoid these words or would think of an alternative word to say. When reading though, you have to read what is written. I had many unpleasant days attempting to read and I am now very happy those days are over.

Trying to meet girls and to get a girlfriend proved very difficult and not because I am ugly. My negative brain would always be talking to me stating that a particular girl that I was interested in would not want to go out with someone who has a stutter. If I did manage to date a girl, I would then have the horror of meeting her family and friends. Socialising when you have a stutter is not easy.

Other areas of life which proved difficult for me were:

Ordering food or drink at a bar

Trying to obtain employment

Speaking on the telephone

Answering peoples questions

Introducing people

Introducing myself to a group of people, for example at the start of a course at work

As you can tell, it is quite difficult having a stutter at times.
